Yesterday I was witness to a lovely wedding ceremony. Just as the celebrations began, my cellphone began to vibrate (had wisely turned off the volume) .
It was the call I had been praying for.
As discreetly as possible during a lull in the proceedings I looked at the message.
Hallelujah. It was a message from my son. He had passed his final exam. He graduates! He is now recognized, qualified chef. It was a long fight for him to get this accomplished. He had to battle the college's ignorance that a person who has Crohns' disease can still succeed as a chef. And that a chef can also gain the experiences and techniques required outside of a restaurant setting, but working in an institutional setting like a nursing home, or business cantine. My son proved them wrong, He did his entire practicum in nursing home kitchens, and with the limitations of his Crohns....and passed his exams! He is the first in the history of the college to have done this. Am so proud of him, and the battle that he won, with himself and his illness, and the lack of information and understanding of the school system about people with illnesses as Crohn's.
We are in true Dutch tradition...flying the flag...in his honour.
