"Making scents" ....Monday Nov. 17

The house smells of cinnamon, and freshly baked cookies. These are the scents of a wonderful day. That's what happens, when my dear friends come over unexpectedly, and they bring along the right ingredients. Themselves, their daughter, their dog....and bags full of love, good food, and great company.

My Sunday was going to be a quiet reading day, but after their phone call and request to come over, it turned into a fun baking session. A day of friendship, and caring.
They arrived with bags of goodies.  So sweet, and thoughtful; they also had brought along an entire lunch.  Freshly baked breads, fillings, quiche, and doughnuts to go with the tea and coffee.  And a bag of baking ingredients.
Everyone was so happy to be together for the day; that we settled ourselves in the kitchen. That is the heart of our home.

First thing done, was fresh tea and coffee, and doughnuts.  Chocolate glazed. Even our little princess, R...was wearing a chocolate glazed smile from her chin to her nose.

Quickly it was decided to bake "pepernoten".  A typical dutch mini cookie that is enjoyed during the Christmas season. Made with lots of cinnamon, molasses, and almonds.  It was R.'s first time that she could help to roll and make the cookies.  At 2 1/2 years old, it was a big thing for her.  She was dancing around the kitchen impatient for the cookies to bake.  Cooling off  the cookies couldn't happen fast enough for her (and us). So while they were still warm we were already test tasting them.  R...was so proud of herself that she had baked them.  The rest of the day was spent content and relaxed, and eating pepernoten.

Am so enjoying the times we have together.  Yet it is sad, in some ways; knowing that our visiting days are limited.  In a few weeks, they will be no more. They are moving back to the States.
These visits are so dear to me, and yet each time we say good bye; it makes my heart cry. It is one more goodbye closer to the real goodbye. We have become so close over the years.

The ease and the honesty of our friendships are so priceless to me.  Popping over, for a cup of tea, and a chat.  Or just dropping in, to go for a walk together; or just needing a hug, and a shoulder to cry on.  Now they are still so close, and available....in a few weeks...no longer possible.

So the coming weeks that we are together, we are trying to see each other often.  Making memories now; to carry us when we are apart.
Bitter sweet.
